Apart from the stunning display of athleticism, the piece “Jumpin’ Jive,” by brothers Harold and Fayard Nicholas from the 1943 film Stormy Weather features a fascinatingly musical use of horn lines. The illustrative choreography punctuates some of the brass parts, while leaving some to stand for themselves. It’s said that Fred Astaire called this piece “the greatest movie musical sequence he had ever seen.”
